Our Services

What is Clergy Sexual Abuse?

Sexual misconduct is a complex issue. It is a betrayal of relationship of trust.  It is a violation of the role of pastor/counselor who is called upon to exercise integrity, sensitivity and care.  In the early stages of sexual misconduct, the behavior causes the victim to feel uncomfortable and confused.  As it progresses and intensifies, the victim begins to feel guilty and responsible for what is happening.

Abusive sexualized behaviors include verbal sex talk and innuendoes, hugs, kisses, touching, intercourse, and sometimes ritual abuse. These are accompanied by threats or pacts to “keep the secret.”

Clergy sexual abuse is a power issue.  The pastor is seen as God’s agent to lead the congregation; thus, when that sacred trust is violated, the inner soul is injured.

Anyone in a vulnerable position can be exploited—children or adults.  Professional caretakers have an ethical responsibility to uphold integrity.  Pastor professionals also have moral and sacred responsibility to oversee the safety of their congregants.

Where an imbalance of power exists, there can be no authentic consensual relationship.  When a pastor acts out a sexual relationship with a congregant, it is abuse.

A Word to the Survivor and Family

Are you fearful…angry….feeling alone, isolated and confused?  Your whole world may be out of control and it is difficult to face each new day.

We are here to listen with compassion and understanding to what you are going through, and empathize with how you are feeling.
